We now begin to consider fights which a person may have against the land of another, and the first of such rights that we shall consider is the easement. An easement gives the right to use the land of another in a particular way (a positive ease�ment, e.g. a right of way) or the right to prevent another from using his own land in a particular (a negative easement, e.g. a right of light, which prevents the neighbour from building on his land in such a way as unduly to obstruct the flow of natural light to the windows of a house or other building). An easement is a right in rem, which binds the land over which it is exercisable in the hands of successive owners, and which can be enforced by successive owners of the land for the benefit of which it was granted.
